Claire Manumission

Dearest Moteliers, It is crisp and cold outside but we have the fire burning in the stove as I write these words to you. I handed in two more chapters to our publisher at Unbound before the holidays and promptly came down with covid, but the good news is that I have been told they are the best ones yet. Just wanted to reach out and let you know that we haven’t disappeared off the face of the planet! So hold tight! I am now back at my writing desk in good health in the imagined company of the Ibiza Posse, taking advice from Jean Paul Gaultier which ends in a full police raid, and the Motel going up against the club owners aka the discotheque mafia. The Motel was a rebel institution completely outside of the system and as remembered in the book 'when the police asked if everyone was taking drugs? "Of course they are!" Roared Eric the Viking "But this is art!"'. It has been great receiving your personal stories and photographs which all go into the mix. It has been an out of body experience reading about ‘it’ from the perspective of friends, DJs, ravers and dealers. I love the effect Manumission had on so many. 2022 was a phenomenal year for The Motel. We exceeded our personal expectations by reaching all of our pledging goals including the grandest pledge of all.

Dear Moteliers, With the spring rain rejuvenation up here in the mountains - rivers replenished, I am writing to let you know Part 1 has now been completed - which took longer than expected, because we had a wonderful idea - tried it, and as a result we restructured 11 chapters. I am however thrilled with the result which received the following great feedback from our publisher - It feels like you have properly hit your stride now with it. Just keep going like this. I think it is going to be an amazing book. Last week we delivered the first chapter of Part 2. The chapter took us through a broad spectrum of emotions - tears of joy and of sadness, and if something made me laugh out loud and ask the question ‘can I really add that?’ - the answer from Mike was a resounding YES! The publisher's feedback... 'That's fantastic'. It revisits opening night… Uncovers a Carl Cox Tina Turner Toga saga… And a curious encounter with Henk de Vries legendary owner of The Bulldog in Amsterdam - who arrives at the Motel with a gift of 12 polystyrene boxes stuffed with fresh magic mushrooms (which turn out to be the only food that Irivine Welsh remembers eating on his visit, and we will get a taste of in upcoming chapters). (see Irvine's quote here along with some fabulous words from legendary rock journalist and Motel regular Kris Needs) The great news is we have cleared all other work commitments to devote 100% of our time to completing the book - aiming to have the first draft of the manuscript to Unbound by the end of the summer. Then along with editing we will be opening up the archive and selecting the photographs, design notes and artwork to be included. I will also start on some of the extra goodies like the Love Letters and digital rewards whilst Mike dives into the illustrations for my chapter headings and his special editions. With love as always and a huge thank you again for your treasured support and patience dear patrons it's back to the Memory Motel, as the summer of '98 beckons and softly swells all around me. The Curious Case of Magische Paddenstoelen & the Tina Turner Toga Saga...

Esteemed Moteliers, A big shout out from Mission HQ. I was going about my morning ritual - bathing the baby tortoise that our daughter found wandering down the road, purging myself of the previous night's excesses with a mint and green tea, and getting ready to dive into the next chapter of the book when the phone rang… ‘Alright Claire!?’ One of our Motel patrons asked. ‘Derek!?’ ‘How’s the book coming along?’ ‘It is a long process, every word has to be just right!’ ‘Yeah,’ I could feel him rubbing his hands together in anticipation of revisiting that heady and hedonistic 'time of our lives'. ‘You’ve got to get it right. When I get my copy I’m going to take myself off and give it my full attention.’ I bet you are, I laughed. I was glad he called. In the summer of 98 Derek Dahlarge, Wall of Sound DJ/Producer was booked to play the Manumission opening party on Monday June 15th. He enjoyed more than his fair share of Motel mischief shacked up as he was in room no 12 - the room next door to ours. And didn’t leave until it was almost Christmas! I had been meaning to ask him for his story. ‘What’s it like? Taking yourself right back there!? To the scene of the crime.’ He asked earnestly. It made me think that you my dear Moteliers might be wondering the same thing. I have just finished another chapter for our publisher over at Unbound who has given some great feedback so far… 'it reads brilliantly. I especially love the…’ (The rest of the comment I am omitting as it gives too much away ;) Personally I’m loving being back in Calle de la Virgen with La Prohibida, my favourite drag queen, Maxi the Dome bartender... Me and Maxi at Dome... The thing about the Motel - we were all complicit, so none of us talked. 

We were all too busy living to give too much thought to what it was we were doing, or discuss it with anyone in the outside world, besides, they’d never believe it.

We have been back on the island of Ibiza launching our new experiential daytime event AiLIEN also known as ANIMUSOMNIS - which in true cryptic mission style is an anagram of MANUMISSION. AiLIEN & The Motel are intrinsically linked - you will find out how when you receive your copy of the book. It involves me slipping through a portal in a black out on the night of my 24th birthday, the night Norman & Zoe fell in love and Lisa I'anson got lost in the graffiti tagged hallways... The AiLIEN opening was thankfully a big success, so we can now get back to the exhillerating task of writing and editing The Motel. We will only get the opportunity to do this right once! So we thank you for your on going patience as we promise to make reading your copy of The Motel the perfectly blissed-out-loved-up experience that it deserves to be. One of our Executive Producer pledgers and a few of our patrons were at the premiere and it was a joy to be together for the rebirth and to see the next generation enjoying the festivities. One of our Executive Producer pledgers and a few of our patrons were at the premiere and it was a joy to be together for the rebirth and to see the next generation enjoying the festivities.

The AiLIEN parties are the second Sunday of every month from now through to October, the next one is on Sunday 12th June. If any of you fine patrons of The Motel would like to join us dm us on instagram @mcmanumission and we will endeavor to get you on our personal guest list.

Dearest Friends & Moteliers, Two years writing the memoir. It's been so time consuming and immersive that I often plan to - but totally forget - to give you an update. To make matters more complicated over the holidays our publishers relaunched their website, leaving all their authors unable to send out any news to their highly valued pledgers. Recent chapters include stories built on extensive research, fact checking & interviews with the inmates and intimate Manumission and Motel circle. This book is intended to be an entertaining yet truthful time capsule honestly reflecting on the lives and adventures of a nonconformist tribe. In the hope that if it is picked up 200 years from now it might even be viewed as an anthropological study. A humorous guide to an alternative way of life. God knows how repressed people will be in the future or what more freedoms will be taken away!? The finale sees Howard Marks aka Mr Nice and Jon Carter’s Monkey Mafia, entangle with the Manumission massive from entertainers to New Yorkers, music industry darlings & fresh faced Radio 1 DJs as the sweat drips off the low slung ceiling of the pink pussy strip joint, the rooftop shantytown swells into existence & secrets and stimulants are shared in the graffiti stained corridors. Some fall in love over the wheels of steel. The rest of us fall into a psychedelic black spot… I thank you once again for your patience while we finish the remaining chapters.
