Either that or you’re sick to the gold teeth of hearing people banging on about the heat. Either way, we thought it was high time to send you a summer update on how the Talking Bottom book is progressing. We know many of you have been asking and we appreciate your patience. It turns out penning an intelligently-written, well-researched and (at times) humorous book takes quite a while. And the book we’re writing is taking some time too. As three of us are scribbling this massive tome, we are each giving every chapter a ruddy good seeing too before we feel confident that the final version is ready to submit. Honestly, you can SEE our nipples we’re working so hard! Once it is delivered, it will be subject to a robust editing process by Unbound (i.e the publishers will make sure it isn’t a load of old b*llocks like War and Peace). We promise to inform you the moment we can share news of an expected publication date but it is likely going to hit the shelves in 2023, rather than 2022 as first hoped. Apologies that we made a slight miscalculation on the timings but, rest assured, the research stage is complete and large swathes of it are written. We are excited to share our 100% unofficial guide to the greatest sitcom ever made with you all, and we are enduringly grateful to each and every one of you for pledging your hard-earned cash to support the project in the first place. Bottom is 30 years old today! A rather bumper crop of cards this year! To celebrate, we thought we’d ‘have everyone round from the pub for bit of a drink and a dance’ and then give you an update on the Talking Bottom book! It’s gonna happen! Thanks to all you FAAAAAANTASTIC pledgers we are currently furiously writing it, researching it, then stopping and having a fag, and then writing it a bit more. It’s a work in progress and it should be out in 2022 (we don’t know the date yet but we promise, and we mean it - look we haven’t got our fingers crossed or anything – that it will be with you as soon as possible to study. While you’re alone in the house.) In other big news - to mark Bottom entering its dirty thirties (oo-er) - we’re launching a special anniversary podcast series delving into themes like ‘physical comedy’ and ‘class and poverty’ to honour Bottom’s comedy legacy. We know it’s been a while since you backed our great idea in good faith and we wanted to let you know that it's very nearly done. We only get one go at getting this right and want to make sure it's as good as possible. We're aware you had likely hoped it’d happen inside a year! So did we! It’s truly amazing how much time it takes to write an entire book, especially while fitting it in around our vital new hobbies. Ange has started bus surfing, Mat’s printing his own obscenely pornographic currency and Paul’s… well, he’s mostly been w**king so no change there. Apologies for being quiet on the socials but we didn't think it would be a good look to spend time posting memes and videos that's better spent researching and writing (so we’ve just been sending them to each other on whatsapp). We are marking each other's homework as we speak and will soon deliver it to Unbound, who will then decide on a publishing date. We’re writing as if Skullcrusher Henderson, Mad Dog Patrick 'Do You Want Some Of This' O'Fist, Geoffrey The Psychopathic Penis Remover and Horace Big are all eagerly awaiting their copies, too. We honestly really haven’t eloped to the Bahamas. We don’t get your hard-pledged cash until the book is out in print so it’s in our own interests to finish ourselves off as soon as possible. Paul’s been down the BBC Archives to thumb through some seriously fascinating original scripts, photographs and correspondence to give us great insight into the process Rik and Ade went through to bring Bottom to our screens. Hello Bottom lovers! We're twisting our nipples with excitement to reveal the cover for the Talking Bottom book AND the *trumpet sound* Sunday Fish Finger i.e. publication date! We've been working hard at it with the good folks at Unbound on the development edit of the book, finalising picture selections, receiving a fantastic foreword from a Bottom legend and generally falling on the text and giving it a good kicking like Chief Inspector Grobbelaar on Richie's testicles. We're especially proud of the updated cover which is inspired by the Bottom Live VHS artwork and it now features the sexy faces of the Hammersmith Hardmen themselves. ‘Give in... give in to your cravings…’ Obviously, we want the book in your hands quicker than it takes Eddie to plummet from the shop roof, but the publication process is a meticulous one. July 3rd has been set by Unbound as the date of release (OO-ER) which means you'll all be able to enjoy it in glorious sunshine! We're stiff, throbbing and spilling over into fish at the prospect of the book adorning coffee tables, steadying table legs and being used as the ultimate toilet companion next summer. Maybe it'll even be read faster than Richie tackled War and Peace! Thanks for sticking with us through what was a nerve-wracking, pulse-quickening and ultimately gratifying experience for us first-timers (...in the book publishing process).
