The Ghost Camera is a gripping sci-fi thriller in which a British hi-tech start-up accidentally discover an alternative use for one of their inventions – by creating a tiny, momentary black hole in a lab, they can capture images that defy all attempts to explain them.
Morris is a laboratory janitor in Oxford and is perfectly happy with his lot. Nearing retirement, he has no desire to try anything new: he prefers to bumble along, keeping a low profile. That works well until he does an extra shift at the start-up he works for, Chipperau Fusioneering. Instead of receiving money, he gets paid in apparently worthless shares.
Soon after, the company begins to attract attention, its reputation moving outside the academic bubble, into the science nerd bubble and then into wider public fame. With this rise in profile, there is a corresponding rise in the share price. The world, and in particular speculative investors, are increasingly interested in what Chipperau Fusioneering and their sister company FrameWarp are up to.
The initial attempt to build a micro fusion reactor that would produce cheap, environmentally friendly energy is a failure. But they soon discover the tech they have built possesses a function they never planned for – it can be adapted into an image capture device that sees through time, not space, revealing what appear to be other versions of our world. Dubbed the ‘Ghost Camera’, soon the lines between the device’s supporters and detractors are drawn and battle commences. And right in the middle of it all stands Morris, the unlikeliest of heroes…
Told through Morris’s own observations, but also through clippings from newspapers, tech magazines and websites from all over the world – The Ghost Camera offers a Black Mirror-style parable about where technology might lead us.
