I've recently been working with actor Neil Pearson of a sales catalogue of classic BBC Radio comedy scripts. Among the haul were great swathes of 'The Floggits'. It was a show new to Neil but not to me, for when I was working with Joan Sims on her autobiography she had fond members of the series. It was an early success for her, as well as Ronnie Barker and Anthony Newley, although the real stars were Elsie and Doris Waters. They had created the working class ladies Gert and Daisy years before, finding great success during the dark days of World War II. A real tonic for a bombed Britain, now they hardly warrant a footnote in histories of British comedy. However, unsurprisingly, they get the full celebratory treatment within the pages of 'Forgotten Heroes...'
