Falling Stars on a Sea Path

This beautiful photograph was taken at Vähä-Kausjärvi, Lempäälä, Finland by Juho Holmi and you can view the original on Fickr.

I stood at my window in the small hours last night, willing the Perseid shower to appear, but a mix of violent street lighting and thunderstorm foiled me... again. I did see it once. It was my watch, on a night passage and it was at that point mid-ocean, mid-night, when there is only you and eternity. The first shooting star delighted me and I made my wish (OK, it was for 10 minutes more with my mother, who hadn't died long before: there's something like this in the book). Then I counted like an eskimo: One, Two, Many. It was frightening but I set the auto-pilot and went and lay on the coachroof, watching for a stellar missile that might be coming to spear me.
