Come to a special candlelit performance of King Arthur!

Dear friend,

As a supporter of my translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, you might be interested in this: I want to let you know about a special theatrical King Arthur event I am hosting in November. Featuring an abridged version of my forthcoming book for Unbound, a translation of the fourteenth century Alliterative Morte Arthure, it will take place in a candle-lit mediaeval church at Stanstead Abbotts in Hertfordshire, UK.

The Alliterative Morte Arthure (King Arthur's Death) is recognised as being second only to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the poems of the Alliterative Revival of the Fourteenth Century. In terms of its quality and literary importance, it is a major piece of work: twice the length of Gawain, with a much faster pace and some cracking themes. The battle scenes between Arthur and Mordred's forces are superbly written with great pace and accuracy; Arthur's lament for Gawain and his final speech after the defeat of Mordred are of the highest literary quality. This really is a triumph of the poet's art.

Book your seats for magical mediaeval show, performed by candlelight:

The show will take the form of a heightened reading from three experienced storytellers (including me) who will move around the ancient church of St James, lit only by candlelight. Directed by former Royal Opera House director Mike Ashman, and accompanied throughout by the music of Dr Jon Banks (a musical director of London's Globe Theatre), it will be a very special occasion.

*** The show takes place on Saturday 23rd November 2019; you can book your tickets here ***

We organised a similar performance here based on my translation of Sir Gawain and this was a huge success and a sell-out. All profits raised from the show will support the maintenance of this ancient church, a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Can't attend but would love to own a de luxe copy of the book?

I realise of course that for many, it will be difficult to travel to this event but if you are able to do so, it would be lovely to see you there! However, if can't make it, you can still enjoy this magnificent alliterative masterpiece by pre-ordering the book itself through Unbound (pre-order here), if you have not done so already. There are also some special pledge rewards remaining too if you'd like something extra unique too!

Right now, the book is in its editorial phase so getting ever closer to production. Packed with over 30 linocut illustrations and containing a historical introduction and extensive notes and a detailed glossary, this book will prove to be a magnificent addition to your library. Don't forget that pre-ordered pledger copies are de luxe editions too and completely different to those which will be sold later in the shops. Like Gawain, your name will be printed in the back in recognition of your support in helping make this book reality.

It would be lovely to see you in November.
