In our last update you may recall we talked about making a book within the book. This means printing colour pictures on our archival giclee printer and inserting them into the text pages. Today we made a dummy version; we took one of the folded and collated books and inserted printed proofs of the illustrations.
There is a constraint; the book is printed in signatures. Pages are gathered together and sewn through the fold. This means if we insert a picture in front of page 1, we need another in front of page 20. This means pictures will hinge back and forth as freely as the text pages.
They will be sewn in, for added strength. But most importantly, the spine will be packed out. When you add lots of inserts to a sketchbook it becomes more like a fan. It doesn't shut anymore. Because we sew our pictures in in pairs, the spine will be widened proportionally and it will shut properly.
