‘I write first and foremost for an Arab audience’
Hanan al-Shaykh talks about her latest novel on the love - and sex - lives of two independent Lebanese-born women.
Hanan al-Shaykh is one of the Arab world's most acclaimed writers. Only in London was shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction prize while most recently One Thousand and One Nights, her acclaimed reimagining of Arabic folktales, was adapted for the stage and performed at the Edinburgh International Festival. A journalist, memoirist, short story writer, playwright and novelist, Hanan al-Shaykh’s work has been translated into 28 languages. Born and brought up in Beirut, she now lives in London.
