It's been a busy Christmas, editing and proofreading like mad with my Mum helping me! I sent the manuscript of Unbelievable in to the Unbounders in the first week of January. My Mum is in the process of reading the whole thing through again and making sure the spelling, word use, punctuation and grammar are correct and that the plot nuances hang together. It's so hard to see these things when you are so close in to the book, as the writer - a second pair of eyes is so helpful! In order to help Mum to do this effectively, I nearly killed my Dad's printer printing it out! It's amazing - it's the first time the book has existed in anything other than digital form since I write mostly straight onto the computer, unless I am out and about and ideas catch me and I have to resort to paper and pen! It actually looks like a proper manuscript now and is starting to feel more real now it's physically in my hands!
Today, I heard back from Dan at Unbound - he and the editor are both working on the manuscript at the moment, then they will send it back to me to have a last go-over - all very exciting! It's really cheered me up because I've been very ill with tonsillitis and pharyngitis for the last few weeks and have been stuck in bed at my parents' watching a lot of daytime TV! I've sent in some ideas as to how I want the cover to look but I suspect that the professionals will have much better ideas than I do! I can't wait to see what they come up with - both for the special hardcover for subscribers and the paperback that will come out afterwards!
In the meantime, I'm working on a few short stories for competitions (while in bed - so grateful to whoever first invented the laptop!) and you can read my entry into the ABCtales current competition here, as well as entering yourself:
My entry has been inspired by the TimeOut photoshoot I did at the start of the month in London (see Unbound blog) and also by all the crime dramas on TV and celebrity gossip magazines I've been devouring while stuck in bed!
I am also going to continue working on the sequel to Unbelievable, which I started last year.
Hope you're all having a great 2012 so far!
