Midwinter progress report

Wednesday, 21 December 2016

Hello! Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day, and it seemed like a good moment to give a little report back on progress on the almanac since funding reached 100% back in October. Thrillingly, the support has continued to come in and the almanac is currently funded to 109%, but I have been able to take my foot off of the sales pedal and start on the creating. We have engaged a wonderful illustrator, Emma Dibben (find her at www.emmadibben.com) and the excellent book designer Matt Cox of Newman & Eastwood and together with Unbound we have been scheming and plotting to make this into the beautiful thing I dreamed it would be. With their help it is going to be very lovely indeed, and it is exciting to think that this time next year it will be dropping into stockings.

And I have been writing! And reading like the wind, stretching my brain around astronomy, meteorology, oceanography (don't worry I am picking up experts as I go along too!) and fitting recipes to seasons, produce and festivities. It is starting to form into a real and beautiful thing. I will drop in here every now and again to keep you up to date, but for now happy solstice, and merry christmas, I'm going to light a fire and raise a glass to the turning of the year.

Dear Lia,
I toasted the shortest day along with you. You in Bristol, me just outside Brighton.
I am as excited as you to see the book & read it. I tend to only eat the food that I grow in my garden. That way I know that it's pesticide-free, fresh & full of goodness as it goes into my cooking pot. I don't relish your hard work to producing this book but it's obviously a mission & one I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. As the seasons in the garden seem to be changing it's quite a task you have set yourself. My best wishes & heartfelt warmth go out to you & all of your supporters who must feel a similar way to myself.
With love, Pat Nunn
