So when's the book out?

Sunday, 27 August 2017

Hello beautiful people,

This update is long overdue. Ever since The Moor became fully funded on the last day of July (THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me get it there, by the way) I’ve been meaning to let people know what the process will look like going forward. Due to a hopeless lack of organisation on my part, though, I’m only just getting round to it now.

So: when will you actually be getting your hands on that sweet, sweet book?

The short, honest answer is: not for a little while yet. The thing is, the publishing process is a long one. There are a whole bunch of different stages. Over the last few weeks I’ve been working with my agent on a few small tweaks to the novel, and the good news is I’ve now sent the final draft version of my manuscript over to Unbound. From this point it’ll likely be 6-8 months before the book comes out.

The main aim of those months will be to make the book the best it can possibly be. First there will be a structural edit, where an editor will give my manuscript a close read and make suggestions for how it could be improved; after that comes a copy edit, which is basically a very thorough check for things like spelling, grammar, and consistency; then the design process for the cover starts, and the manuscript goes through typesetting and formatting so it fits nicely into those lovely eBooks and paperbacks you’ve ordered; then, finally, it gets printed.

It’s a long old process, but it’ll be worth it in the end. It also gives me a bit of time to start fulfilling all those pledges — I’ve got at least 16 pieces of flash fiction and three original horror stories to write, so I need to get cracking!

Thanks again for the part you’ve played in helping me publish my book. I’ll send out more waffling updates like this one over the coming months, as we work our way through each step on that glorious road to publication day…

(P.S. If you're reading this and you haven't had a chance to pre-order a copy yet, there's still time! Your name will go on the list of supporters in the published book, which basically means if I ever get super famous some day you'll literally be able to tell people "he couldn't have done it without me". And you'll have written proof.)
