65 thousand words!

Friday, 14 October 2016

Hi supporters! I've hit 65 thousand words!

Sorry it's been a while since I've written in my shed. I've been busy graduating from my MA in Creative writing here in Oxford.

This book is my dissertation, which was great as well as complicated! Poppy has a complicated time travel plot, and although I've tightly plotted it out beforehand, it keeps surprising me. My dissertation was the first 20 thousand words of Poppy, tightly edited and polished. The problem is that I'm still not finished the book, and sometimes you just don't know where a story is going to go until you're writing it.

For example, I have a character called The Boi, who appears as an unlikely friend to my protagonist, Poppy. It's only after I'd written a few scenes including The Boi that I had an epiphany and managed to wonderfully link her character in to my major theme. I can't say much more without spoiling the plot!

Sometimes characters can also surprise you as you get to know them, and if they're a major character then that can have the plot veering off in an unexpected direction, too! Let’s just say that my antagonist has had a couple of unexpected facelifts during the course of writing it.

Now I’m sitting on a nearly complete novel, I can say I’m really proud of what I’ve produced. Some days I hate it and would love to burn the lot, but from talking to fellow writers, this seems to be completely natural.

I’m determined to make more of an effort in my shed this month, and will be sharing drawings of my characters, including insights into my writing process, exclusively with my supporters. Please share this book with your friends if you believe in the project, and let’s try and get it funded!
