Saxon House erection
Sorry - couldn't resist the Carry On title. At the well where I constantly draw inspiration (Weald & Downland Open Air Museum Singleton) their latest project is to build a Saxon House. Just like with my 'Viking' book, there are a few clues, a lot of scolarly opinion and mostly educated guesswork from the craftsman. Yesterday a team of carpenters under the direction of Joe grappled with the heavy wooden eaves, while a dog and I watched. Seems to me as though the saxons probably did the same, except I would have brewed some ale instead of pointing an iPhone. And dogs are always my twin spirits.

I love the Saxon period. That sense of being familiar, yet separated by more than just time. Oh yes - and being grateful that struggling with Sweet's Anglo-Saxon reader made Middle English a doddle!

You must come and see the Saxon House when it's up.
