Although things have been a bit quiet lately update-wise, I promise there's been plenty going on behind the scenes. If you were following Ten Little Astronauts
in the run up to Christmas, you'll know that I was working to a deadline of sorts
. If the book didn't reach its original funding goal by Christmas, I'd arrange to move it to a new paperback list that Unbound started after it launched. Either way, the plan was to get the book into the hands of supporters in a timely fashion.
Well, it's after Christmas, and as arranged I'm in the process of moving the book to that new list. At 73% funded, we were actually close enough to the original target that there was the possibility of still shooting for 100% (which would mean getting it distributed through Penguin Random House). However, that's not what I promised, and I think the paperback list is the better option for a few reasons:
- Unbound's "new" paperback list has actually been going for a while now, and some of its titles are outselling the ones distributed by Penguin Random House.
- Unbound can release the book themselves in Summer or Autumn 2018, whereas if we stuck with the original plan of having it distributed through Penguin Random House it wouldn't be out until mid-2019 at the earliest. Those of you who supported Ten Little Astronauts at the very beginning have been behind it a year and a half already: I'd rather not leave it another year and a half before getting you your books!
- The book may already be at 73% funding, but getting it to that stage has more or less exhausted my options. Ten Little Astronauts got a huge amount of attention over those last few weeks, largely down to the people already supporting it helping to spread the word, so I feel as though it's gone as far as it can just as an idea. The next step is to make it available as an actual, printed book and see how much further it can go from there!
Basically, switching to the new paperback list will mean I can be sure of getting your book to you this year, and should give the book every chance of success once it's released. In terms of what you'll get through your letterbox as a supporter, there's no significant difference. This does reduce the options when it comes to cover design - the paperbacks won't have any metallic bits or spot gloss - but that seems like a trivial reason to keep people waiting.
If all goes to plan, this change should be reflected on the book's page within the next week or so. Keep an eye out and you might see it jump beyond 100%! In the meantime, I'd like to take the opportunity to say thanks once again to everyone who's helped make this happen. There'll be more news to come, first when that change goes through and later on as I work to edit Ten Little Astronauts and get it ready for you to read!
