TO BORROW LENIN'S WORDS: ONE STEP FORWARD... (A NEW PUBLICATION DATE)
Actually that should read 'several steps forward': in addition to the fabulous cover design, I've now received the full cover artwork and have chosen a rather lovely typeface for the main body of the book. And I understand that the typeset proofs will be on their way to me very soon. All of which is pretty exciting.
The second half of Lenin's quote, 'two steps back', refers to yesterday's slightly disheartening news: that in response to 'strong advice' from their sales and PR teams, the publishers have moved the publication date of The Tango Effect to 16 April 2020.
Their thinking goes as folllows:
"We want to move it out of the start of the year – away from the self-helpy 'new year, new me' pile – and give it room to breathe at the beginning of spring. This will give the book its best commercial advantage, as a January publication date would see the book competing with booksellers' orders for the big November and December books, whereas an April publication date means booksellers will be ordering with fresh eyes once the Christmas rush is behind them."
So more waiting, I'm afraid. It's frustrating, certainly and disappointing for those of you who were relying on The Tango Effect as stocking fillers. It will also narrowly miss the Easter Bunny's sack as Easter falls on 12 April next year. But of course they are the experts and I understand the commercial constraints. I might suggest the slightly earlier date of 13 April as that will coincide with a big birthday (and maybe also with a Bank Holiday milonga? which begins to sound like a wonderful triple celebration!) although I guess there may be problems with the 13th being Bank Holiday Monday... At any rate, I'd like to thank you all once again for your incredible patience and your support!
Meanwhile, the Poplar project is coming to an end shortly with our final sharing event, exhibition and performance a week today, 20th July at Poplar Union, Cotall Street from 2:00 p. m. Tango it isn't but I can promise some wonderful film, photographs and artwork as well as live music and (I hope!) a memorable performance. It would be great to see some friendly faces there - no need to book/all welcome!
