Title: 'On Pride and Shame: how cooking Seven Curry with my mother helped me reconcile my queer and cultural identities'
Synopsis: As a mixed-race Guyanese person who is also gender non-conforming, holding multiple marginalized identities can be daunting, especially when these identities feel at odds. I’ve felt pressure to align with one identity over another for reasons of safety and comfort but the practice of cooking my cultural food with family is helping me take a less binaristic approach. In my essay, I deal with these themes central to identity as well as isolation and community.
