Welcome to Modernism Beyond Metro-Land!

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you for supporting Modernism Beyond Metro-Land. In just over 24 hours we have already reached 14% of our target, an amazing response! I have been planning this book since the publication of A Guide to Modernism in Metro-Land, so it’s wonderful to see the project coming to life.

I have been working on MBM in earnest since March this year, visiting such glamorous locations as Barking, Ilford, Woolwich, Sutton and plenty of others. I still have lots of places still to visit, so hopefully I will be able to update you on my travels.

I also wanted to explain the similarities and differences Modernism Beyond Metro-Land will share with its predecessor. Largely, the layout will be the same. The new book will be divided into boroughs, with a map for each, plus photos and descriptions. We have decided to make the layout of MBM a little clearer, with less photos (but larger ones) and more in-depth text. This will include extended sections for each borough on a particular group of buildings. These sections will include Charles Holden’s Central Line stations in the borough of Redbridge, the Thamesmead estate in Bexley, the work of Eric Lyons and Span in Greenwich and Owen Luder’s brutalist offices in Kingston upon Thames.

The new guide will also be around 40 pages longer than A Guide to Modernism in Metro-Land, allowing even more art deco, modernist and brutalist buildings from the suburbs. For those wondering, the boroughs covered in this book will be; Barking, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Havering, Kingston upon Thames, Lewisham, Merton, Redbridge, Sutton, Waltham Forest and, time permitting, a portion of Surrey.

I hope that has whetted your appetite for Modernism Beyond Metro-Land. Any help you can give the crowdfunding, such as telling any interested friends or family or sharing the project on social media will be very much appreciated (and speed up you receiving the book!). Thank you again for the support and I look forward to updating you again soon.
