A small world fractured in the wake of an untimely death

We did it!

I'm sure I mentioned this somewhere before, but I started writing this book in October 2005. The idea for it came to me some time in 1999. So from one perspective, I've been working on it for 12 years, and from another, it's actually been 18 years.

There's nothing else in my life that I've worked on that long. Even working in the wine trade has only been 16 years. University was 7 (it took me a little longer than most).

And for so much of that time, I never knew if the book was going to be a thing. I mean, I wrote it. Then I rewrote it. Then I got an amazing editor and she made some suggestions and I rewrote it again (which is where the manuscript is now). But it's still just a file in my dropbox and a manuscript in a folder. It doesn't have a cover or a spine. And until yesterday, I had no guarantee that it would ever have those things. It seemed doomed to literary limbo. Until yesterday.

Yesterday, thanks to all you lovely people, the book hit full funding. There's still a long way to go for it to be a beautiful physical object, but it is now certain to be that beautiful physical object. There will be at least one more rewrite (but probably more), copy-editing, type-setting, cover design (totally my favourite thing) to go. I need to chat to my editor and the production team about the schedule for release. But you will all get to read this book. And recommend it to friends. And see your names in the back. And, and this is really important, review it on Amazon and Goodreads and the national press.

So. Thank you. Honestly, thank you so very much. It's not so much that I always wanted to be a novelist, it's that I felt I already was one, I just hadn't managed to publish that first novel. And now I'm going to do that, and I couldn't have done it without you all. It's my honour to have your names in the back of the book. I hope you enjoy it when it arrives.

Heartiest congratulations, Richard! Yours is such an inspiring story - one that I hope to emulate as my own MS is with Unbound for consideration right now. I was very impressed with the quality of your writing in the extract, and can't wait to learn more about ICS's journey to 'physicality' and then reading the whole thing. Well done!

Looking forward to the full print release. Reading the extract brought me right back to my time at St Andrews. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
