change of scene

I wonder if there is a person out there who doesn't identify with this photo. Supposedly one of the most stressful events in life, probably because for a few weeks we tear up one pattern and try to make another; and for a few months (or two-and-a-half years, in my last move) we feel we're at the mercy of a chain of people we've never met. This is my house today, and its my 27th move. I never planned it that way; I was going to live somewhere remote and grow my own clothes and make my own tomatoes (or something like that). And then today, taping up the umpteenth box of books ('Books - Heavy') it occurred to me that every novel, every book in fact, is just like this. Creating a new pattern; seeing how it looks from widdershins, or the other side of a mirror.  Strange places, in other words (those two 'childrens' stories haunted me when I was small - stepping across a shadow and finding yourself in another world, and stepping through a mirrot into yet another. Then there's wardrobes and Narnia) .......we move across thresholds and don't know where we're going. Which brings me back to the boxes........

It does make you look at your life in terms of the junk you cart around. I spent 12 years as a yacht skipper, just me, some bags of clothes, a beaten up old car, managed to lose/give away/forget pretty much most of my life junk. Hard at first, imagine you are going to live on an island, in the middle of nowhere, to get there you have a canoe.... what you would take?

Hello Sean, a very late response- I hope you'll excuse it. I can't imagine living on a boat; principally because I get very seasick! Even watching 'Dead Calm' makes me ill :)
My canoe would be full of books and writing paper, and paints. No doubt it would sink pretty rapidly.
