“The difficuitly on the programme side was seen, in the outside world… as being a matter of permissiveness… sex and violence and so on, I actually thought they were never very problematical…. It was mediocrity and bad programmes that were killers. Frankie Howerd’s show was a very bawdy programme but it wasn’t characteristically dirty, it was characteristically funny”.
