At the beginning of the war my father didn't have much time for Churchill, or for the British army - he thought the officers were largely "English half-men... clerk types who say 'endeavour' instead of 'try' and 'require' instead of 'want'"". But by the war's end he had become deeply impressed by the army's ability to organise itself, and he characteristically found in Churchill a heroic figure, and for the first of the two times in his life he did not vote Liberal, he voted for him.
