The final update
(a very satisfying photo)
This is going to be my last update to pledgers - if you want to keep in touch, you can follow my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or blog. I don't have an official website yet, but it's on my to-do list, along with things like "learn to drive" and "understand the congiuntivo". One day!
The book launch in Rome was a success.
Tiffany Parks and I had a chat about our books (her novel, Midnight in the Piazza, is also set in Rome) and influences. The event was marketed as part of Otherwise's "Women Under the Influence" series, which was a remarkably appropriate title. What is In Exile about if not girls under the influence?
A brief summary of topics covered:
- why we moved to Italy, and what we've learned from being here as long-term expats
- pantsing vs plotting
- autobiography in our novels - to what extent the expat female protagonists of our novels were based on us
- the significance of certain places in Rome (the Jewish Ghetto, Protestant Cemetery, Appian Way), and why the city holds such fascination for writers
- bacchic violence
- Appreciation for Julian Sands
If you came, thank you for coming! If you didn't, hopefully next time, either in Rome or the UK.
Woman in bookshop to small child: "Guarda, c'e' una scrittrice che firma i libri!" ("Look, there's a writer signing books!") A scrittrice trying to look professional while dropping books everywhere and regretting the stupid signature she came up with as a 12 year old.
And thanks again to all of you, for making this happen.
