Fear Hack

By Hilary Gallo

How what scares us, makes us.

Big News! We have a cover, we have a book, we are getting ready to go, go, go...

Making a book takes time. First, the writer crafts and agonises in glorious isolation. There are points of great doubt and moments of glorious breakthrough. Then, even the choicest creations are cut-up and questioned then nurtured in the cold light of day. There are many re-cuts and at times the whole thing feels like its falling to pieces. Then, in a moment of clarity, the mist clears and the book is complete. The manuscript is finally handed over. Even when we think it is done there are edits and checks; editors of all types. But, in a wonderful coming together, all these make the final product better and better and better and better and better... I love my editors...

So, the good news is - we are finally there!

We've now agreed the words and we've now agreed how the words will look. We have now even agreed the cover. I hope you like it. It's a work of art in itself and the process we went through to get to it is unusual. We did a Fear Hack, then a four part design workshop and the cover emerged out of that. The process included my daughter (it was holidays, poor thing, I dragged her along) and I hanging upside down on a climbing frame in a park in Hackney. They told us we had to experience fear in order to brief them properly and they were right, we did experience fear...

There is even a piece in Creative Review today about it and I'd like to say a big thank you to David Johnston and his team at Accept & Proceed for not only backing the book but also for designing the cover. As I'm finding out, the backers of this book are very special people. That means you!

Our big publication day is 10th January but we hope to have books to all of you well before then. In fact, I'll be asking this question on Monday when I sit down with unbound to plan the next part of the process.  I want to get this book out there and I know you can all help that process. Do let me know if there is anything we can do together that I haven't spotted yet (sometimes I am a bit slow or maybe even still a bit fearful - you know how it is, right?).

Big love to you all,

Hilary
