What's down the hole?
The key question for all supporters of this particular tome...
For the record, I know what is down there. Deep Down There, you could say (hey, that's the name of the book!). Is it revealed in the book? Kind of. Maybe. You'd have to read it to find out...
But yes, I know what's down there, and cultivating the mystery of what is down there was one of the more fun aspects of writing Deep Down There. When writing, I usually start with a skeleton of the plot so I know what's going on at all times, at all points. This means even when the story is focussed on a different scene, the looming subject of the story (in this case, the hole) is still there. Of course, the whole book isn't all "Have you heard about the hole?" "That hole is some kinda something." "I'm tired of how deep this hole is. Overrated!"
It also helps craft an overall arc across the whole story. While I have simply been referring to the book as "the horror about a hole", it is of course much more than that. It is about relationships, the mental distress we place upon ourselves, and all kinds of obsession. But at the end of the day, the hole is indeed the focus. So I drop little hints and pieces about what it is, how deep it is, and whether it is linked to a larger picture than simply a strange hole.
This, I think, is what made Deep Down There a novel rather than a short story. And hopefully, it will be one that keeps you hooked.
After all, you want to know what's down there, right?
