A Birthday Treat and a Big Thank You
Friday, 14 August 2020
Hello all you lovely subscribers.
And THANK YOU! Cockerings is fully funded!
Blimey, what a mad few months we've had since my last update all the way back in March. Truth be told, I pretty much suspended all activity around trying to get Cockerings funded as it felt wrong to be asking people for money at a time when there was so much worry and uncertainty about money and jobs, and fear for…

Hello you. We're living in strange times aren't we?
It's made even stranger for me by the fact that it all seems to be happening 'somewhere else'. Life seems relatively normal at the moment. As a writer I work from home anyway. My wife is stuck overseas for at least a month but isn't in a Covid19 hotspot (though Barbados is hot) and she's travelling with a nurse with decades of experience, so she…
The Colgan Legacy (Sounds like a Dan Brown book title)
Sunday, 2 February 2020
In the last few months we've seen the passing of some legends - people who, to my generation certainly, were an inspiration. Real heroes. The loss of Nicholas Parsons, Clive James, Neil Innes and, in particular, the wonderful Terry Jones, have all been tough to bear. I'm lucky to have met them all several times and they were all true gents. But I've also lost people I looked up to whose names…

Welcome to the world of tomorrow!
2020 sounds like the future doesn't it? Or, at least, it does to this child of the Sixties. I'm old enough to have watched the Moon landings, and to have been amazed at the arrival of home computers, mobile phones and the Internet. It sometimes seems like these things have always been here, doesn't it? But they haven't of course. My father died in 1991 - the same…

It was gratifying to see a big flurry of entries for the 'Halfway there' competition. It shows that someone reads these updates! :)
That said, there can only be one winner and the name that came out of the deerstalker was ... Liz Wooldridge.
Congratulations Liz, I'll get your prize off to you.
Now, the answers.
I asked you to search my blog and tell me ...
1. What was the name of…
The "We're Halfway There!" Competition
Saturday, 9 November 2019
I promised some time back that, when we reached 50% funding, I'd run a competition for my subscribers.
So here it is.
You MUST be a subscriber; it doesn't matter at what level but you MUST be on the list.
Okay, one rule.
The audiobooks of A Murder To Die For and The Diabolical Club on disk and read by the gorgeous Rula Lenska. They're worth around…
I'd Like A Word

Sorry. Bit tired.
Which is perhaps why things are a bit slow on the campaigning front. We're at 102 subscribers and we're 48% funded so that's good. But we still have a way to go and I wish I had more time to chase pledges.
Thing is, you see, I have a full-time job at the moment. Back in April I was approached to take on a three month contract to work with the College of Policing and…

Hi lovely pledgers
Now then, I've had a number of people query the fact that, unlike my previous books, Cockerings didn't come with a signed book pledge level. There were several reasons for this:
Firstly it's because I chose to publish on Unbound's Digital List as opposed to their Main List. As the vast majority of my books sell via online stores (and a lot of them as e-books) it means that…
Not a Pyramid Scheme. Probably.

Hello lovely pledgefolk.
I've had an idea.
Cockerings is currently 35% funded - we've sailed past the 1/4 mark and the 1/3 mark. 50% is on the horizon.
But the pledges are coming in very slowly.
So what if I ask you guys to help me to get some new pledges?
Not for free, mind.
If you can get me THREE new pledgers I'll send you an exclusive signed print of an artwork by me.
The Clown is Named
Thursday, 22 August 2019
Thank you so much to all of you who responded to my request for a new name for Bozo the Polish clown - one of the main characters in Cockerings.
As you'll recall, I found out that I couldn't use 'Bozo' due to copyright issues. And I didn't want to use a name that's currently in use by a currently registered professional clown.
So I asked you guys. And you came through.
I had some cracking…

25% funded - we're quarter of the way there!
But we can't afford to take our feet off the pedal yet. There's still a long way to go.
And speaking of a long way, I just spent a long weekend in Scotland doing two performances of my talk Life, The Universe, And Elderberries for the Edinburgh Fringe and for Glasgow Skeptics. It was also my birthday on the 11th. I spent it getting wet.
NAME THAT CLOWN
Wednesday, 7 August 2019
If you've read any of my previous updates you'll know that one of the main protagonists in Cockerings is an aged, alcoholic Polish clown called Bozo.
We go a long way back, Bozo and me.
In fact, he's been with me, in notebooks and unpublished short stories for over twenty-five years. And I was delighted when Cockerings was accepted by Unbound because it meant that I could now share him with…
Puppetry of the Pizzas
Saturday, 13 July 2019
One week into the campaign and Cockerings is already 19% funded. Let's keep up the momentum, m'lovelies!
All of the best stories have their roots in real life.
When I was a young cop pounding the beat in Uxbridge, West London, in the early 1980s there was a pizza joint near the bus station called Stanelli’s. I often thought, as I wandered past, that it would be quite funny…
Thirty Years of Clowning about
Wednesday, 3 July 2019
Hello lovely subscribers. You look great. And my word, what a lovely blouse you have on (sorry Rik).
Well, here I am again, begging for money. Well, not quite begging. It's more me asking you if you like the sound of my new book and, if you do, would you mind paying up front for it? It's no worse than me asking to borrow a few quid off you. The price of a big pizza in fact. And as a reward for…
