Nine Digital Postcards To Change Your Life
Wednesday, 24 January 2018
To celebrate the launch today of the paperback edition of Carpe Diem Regained, I’m releasing a series of nine unique digital postcards over at the book’s website, www.carpediem.click.
Each postcard carries an inspiring seize-the-day quote from the likes of Maya Angelou, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Albert Camus. Thanks to all of you who commented on the design options in my last…
The World's First Digital "Death Dice"
Thursday, 29 June 2017
Death is going digital!
In a previous post I shared a wooden "Death Dice" made by a reader of Carpe Diem Regained, with each side depicting one of the six ways of thinking about death from Chapter 2 - like "live each day as if it were for the second time" or "live as if you've got six months left".
The Death Dice has now gone digital. I've written a new article about these different approaches…
The Most Frightening Graph You'll See This Year
Friday, 2 June 2017
Years before embarking on a career writing what might be broadly called ‘popular philosophy’ books, I had another career as a political scientist. I still enjoy flicking through the academic journals in my old field now and then. When doing so recently I came across what ranks as one of the most startling – indeed frightening – graphs I’ve seen in years. It appears in the July 2016 issue of the…
Do you have a friend in America?
Tuesday, 23 May 2017
So have you all been carping the diem? I've been doing my best, at least on behalf of the book, having just returned from a book tour launching the Dutch edition of Carpe Diem Regained. Amongst the great trials I endured was filming for a TV show where I had to talk about the philosophy of hedonism while having a Chinese foot massage in Amsterdam's red light district...I also wrote an essay about…
Have you seized your book?
Monday, 3 April 2017
Well, after nearly four years of intellectual toil, it's done. As you can see from the photo, I've just been in the Unbound offices signing copies of Carpe Diem Regained, hot off the press. By now you should have your own copy in your hands, or it should be arriving in the next few days. Thanks to the good folk at Unbound, it really is an object of beauty - I think the cover is absolutely stunning…
Can you seize the day in 20 seconds?
Monday, 30 January 2017
It’s short. It’s snappy. It’s the new trailer for my book Carpe Diem Regained, which you will shortly have in your hands.
Do take a mere 20 seconds of your day to check it out. And I would be hugely grateful if, as esteemed Ambassadors of Carpe Diem, you had a moment to share the video link on social media: https://www.facebook.com/romankrznaricauthor/videos/1643197975984199/
If you have another…
'Tis the Season to Carpe the Diem
Sunday, 11 December 2016
Good news. My forthcoming book Carpe Diem Regained now has a cover, which I absolutely love (big thanks to the fabulous designer Mecob).
The dancer on the bull seems to me to embody so much of what carpe diem is all about: a vibrant seizing of the moment that is at the same time both defiant and beautiful. She is a modern embodiment of the medieval carnival tradition that calls on us to let…
What is the Greatest Carpe Diem Poem of Them All? Try The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Wednesday, 28 September 2016
Hello to you all. I hope you managed to seize plenty of days over the summer. For my part, I've been seizing a new title for the book. After much debate and soul-searching, it will now be called Carpe Diem Regained: The Vanishing Art of Seizing the Day, rather than the original title used for the crowdfunding campaign, Carpe Diem Reclaimed: The Story of a Cultural Hijack. Fingers crossed that…
From the Cutting Room Floor: Zorba the Greek
Friday, 5 August 2016
So where are we with Carpe Diem Reclaimed? Thanks to you all, the funds have been raised, and the manuscript is now under the fine scalpel of my editors at Unbound. I remain sitting in my study, surrounded by the detritus that accompanies a near-finished book project: piles of notes, books read and unread, newspaper clippings, obscure scholarly articles, and multiple chapter drafts covered with corrections…
A Writer's Whiteboard at Work
Wednesday, 8 June 2016
Hello Carpe Diem Reclaimers!
Now that Carpe Diem Reclaimed is fully funded, I'd like to send you some occasional updates as we progress towards publication of the book.
The photo you can see is a snapshot of one of the whiteboards in my study in Oxford, where I plan out each chapter. This image shows the thinking behind the final chapter, which I've recently completed writing. As you can…
100%! And is the secret to happiness living every day twice?
Friday, 29 April 2016
Carpe Diem Reclaimed is now 100% funded! I feel completely overwhelmed and honoured by the backing given to the book. It's been an amazing process in which I've received incredibly generous support from a huge range of people - old high school friends, neighbours, readers of my previous books from around the world, and others who've simply believed in the project of reclaiming carpe diem from…
Steve Jobs Was Wrong: Don't Live Each Day Like It's Your Last
Monday, 11 April 2016
Live each day like it’s your last. It’s been the mantra of everyone from the Ancient Roman philosopher Seneca to the digital sage Steve Jobs. In my humble opinion, however, there are five fundamental reasons why it is one of the most misguided pieces of life advice to have emerged in Western history. You can find out more by reading a new article I’ve written over at YES magazine.
What song makes you seize the day?
Thursday, 31 March 2016
Inspired by the experience of crowdfunding, I've decided to crowdsource a playlist of Top Ten Carpe Diem songs to be included in my book Carpe Diem Reclaimed. I'd love your contribution - please pop over to my blog, where you can nominate your favourite seize-the-day song for inclusion.
For a bit of inspiration, have a listen to Pink Floyd's 'Time'.
And just to let you know, the crowdfunding…
Epiphany on the Stairs
Friday, 18 March 2016
It’s just four days into the crowdfunding for Carpe Diem Reclaimed and more than a quarter of the total has already been raised – thank you everyone for seizing the day and giving such fantastic support!
Many people have asked me what inspired me to write a book about carpe diem. Usually it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact moment that the idea for a book is born. But for this one, the origin…
