New pages - The Opening Scene #2

Following on from the pages I started drawing last week, here are the final pages to the new opening. Overall, there's magic, some sword fighting and lots of fire!

General note: click on the images to see them in hi-res.

Following on from the previous page, Nadia decides to attack the Witch rather than run. As she runs with her sword, the Witch sets the sword on fire and it begins to melt in her hands. Dropping her sword, the Witch smirks and on Page 4, panel one, there will be a scream scream, highlighting Nadia's fate page off panel.

Page 4 switches back to the rest of the party. They hear the scream and turn back as more Candles surround them. As they get ready for a fight, the ranger draws his bow and fires three arrows (in panel 4) at the Witch, each missing.

Page 5 consists of 3 chunky action panels. Panel 1 shows the lantern cracking on the ground and fire blasting the Ranger through the air. Panel 2 shows the Bard looking into the fire and he becomes surrounded. The Leader is in the background, weapons drawn and valuts towards the Witch in Panel 3. This is the start of a one on one duel between the leader and the Witch.

Page 6 is all action. The leader lands and swings her weapons, the witch dodges each attack and sets the dagger on fire in panel 2. Panels 3 and 4 are reaction shots as the Witch grabs the Sword, unhurt. Panel 5 becomes full bleed and gets rid of the panel boarders. The Witch stands in the fire as the leader is thrown back through the air, her sword now on fire.

Taking the artwork to full bleed is a technique I use a few times in Candles. It's almost like the camera is extending into wide shot and gives you that little bit more room for the visual. I've mostly used it for key action shots to highlight spesfic parts of the scenes and to showcase to the reader (you) that this is a big moment.

Page 7 closes the scene with a short confrontation and exchange of words between the leader and the witch. Panels go from big to small, down the page as the scene ends. Fire taking over the panels.

I'll be spending the next few days on graphic design work and then next week I'll be in London for MCM Comic Con. If any of you are attending, do come and say hi. I'll be in the Comic Village at Table CV15 all weekend, aside from an hour on Sunday, when I'll be on the "Indie Horror Comics" Panel between 12:45 - 13:30. I'll have a bunch of comics, graphic novels, art prints, concertina books, original art and postcard books with me, so please come and check them out and I'll be more than happy to chat and talk all things Candles.

Thanks again for all your support and I hope you like the line work for the new pages.

All the best,
