A fantasy graphic novel about a young girl who sets out to steal magic from an evil Witch and use it to save her dying village.
Generation after generation people are taught one thing, never use magic. The evil Witch has cast a plague known as Dark-bark over the land and one by one, infected villagers are lured into the enchanted forest never to be seen again. As a last resort to save her family, Grace embarks on a quest to steal the Witch’s magic and use it to save her dying village.
Meanwhile, Idris, a flamboyant sorcerer and his talented apprentice Ava, are outcasted from their town and begin to track the source of the Dark-bark. Wolves howl at the night sky and candles begin to glow. The Witch must be stopped at all costs, however, everything is not as it seems.
A graphic novel about magic, family and a plague that has no mercy. Candles is the latest graphic novel from Lyndon White, creator of Sparks & the Fallen Star, the popular Horror Concertina Book series and co-creator of The Mind of James Svengal.
Candles is a more grounded fantasy story and is focused more in a specific area rather than a long-formed quest with lots of walking. It takes direct influence from traditional Brothers Grimm fairy tales, mixed with the flair of Studio Ghibli. It’s light and humorous, yet a little dark and twisted. It’s a world that has been lived in by the characters and where effects of using magic has become taboo.
Our protagonist, Grace, is the one person in her village who sees the good that magic can do. However, after generations of villagers being subjected to the evil Witch and her plague, the villagers and want nothing more to do with it. Despite its potential to cure them and once and for all.
Idris and his apprentice Ava get caught up in the mix of all this. Failing to keep a low profile they cause chaos in their home town and are exiled as magic users. While in exile they find signs of the Dark-bark infecting the land. Due to Idris’ good nature and always wanting to do the right thing, they set out to find the source of the dark magic and destroy it. Not because they seek adventure, but because Idris knows they are the only ones capable of stopping it.
Aimed at lovers of fantasy, fairy tales, monsters and magic, Candles is an all ages book that will take you on a hero’s quest, with all the wonder and heart break that comes with it.
All supporters of the book will see updates the book and how it develops, as Lyndon works through the line work, inking, colouring and lettering of the book. The plan is first to complete all the line work, followed by all the inking, colouring etc.

New pages - The Opening Scene
Friday, 10 May 2019
It's been a busy week. I wrapped up drawing the line work on the other graphic novel (Re-Animator) that I've been working on and I also mapped out the new opening scene for Candles. The scene takes place the night before the village is attacked and follows a group of adventurers heading home. I've just finished drawing the first two pages which you can check out below. I'll be working on the remainding…
The opening scene
Thursday, 2 May 2019
It's been awhile since I've updated you all on all things Candles. Previously I'd mentioned I was contemplating changing the opening scene. Not redrawing any pages, but simply adding in a scene before we meet Grace and the giant wolf attacks the village. That extra scene has now been written and I'm going to start drawing those pages next week, bringing the sequential page count up to 122…
Line work edits
Friday, 1 March 2019
We've now hit March and I'm about to start getting on with inking. Over Feburary I've been editing the line work while balancing a few freelance jobs. Due to the nature of freelancing full time, I have to switch gears and work on other projects from time to time, espcially if the job is time sensive. However, thankfully those side projects are finished and today should be my last day on…
Hitting a Milestone - Line work complete!
Friday, 18 January 2019
I've been working hard getting pages penciled and I am very happy to say, LINEWORK COMPLETE!
After spending the majority of my time over the past four and a half months working my way through the book, I drew the final three pages today. This means I now have a visual for every comic page in the book. The line work is the core visual of each page and (if drawn well) can stand on its…
The Girl and the Wolf
Saturday, 17 November 2018
Things are ticking over nicely and new people are discovering Candles bit by bit. I've been working hard on drawing the line work and theres roughly 85% of the line work finished, ready to be inked! Which is quite a milestone. I've been drawing in a lot of detail throughout the book and its nice to see it all coming together. As such, I wanted to share a couple of pages that are part of the…
The Game Plan
Monday, 22 October 2018
Firsty, thank you for checking out and possibly pledging to Candles. I'm having a blast working on this book and hope you all enjoy the finished product. I wanted to go over the process quickly of how I'm making this book and the "Game Plan" sort of speak.
At this point, the script for Candles is finished. Aside from some slight edits to dialogue or tweaking a panel here of there, it's all locked…
