Witchcraft trials in Salem in 1692-93 which reveal mass hysteria and persecution was the perfect backdrop for Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" which was written during an equally hysterical McCarthy era America. What could be better than a novel set during the English Civil War. Extreme political intrigue and violence over the highest stakes: what would be the governing principles of England. There is enough fodder here for a stable of horses.
