Bitter Leaves

By Tabatha Stirling

A novel that will bring you to the dark heart of Singapore's maid culture

Thursday, 28 July 2016

Welcome to my Shed.  It's actually quite cosy in here and blissfully quiet.  This is because I'm locked in the bedroom, wearing earplugs and trying desperately to not hear the squealing and laughter of my beloved family.

I am settling in to regale you all with exclusive bits and pieces about my book, talk about all sorts of shocking and scandalous events that probably never happened but I live in perpetual hope and some insights into me, Tabby, as a writer.   To everybody that has supported Blood On The Banana Leaf so far, I am incredibly grateful for your extraordinary generosity.  And those that have shared on social media, thank you too.  I hope to share many celebratory glasses with you all once BOTBL is fully funded.

This is a painting of Clarie, my wonderful helper in Singapore.  Without Clarie, I don't think the book would have been written.  She is one of the warmest, talented, thoughtful and most inspirational women I have ever met.  We call each other heart-sisters.  And it is my hope that she will be able to come to Scotland soon to be with us again, either to work or pursue other opportunities.

When Clarie first came to Singapore she worked for an employer in Ang Moh Kio, a northern suburb, she received 350 Singapore Dollars per month (about 125 GBP).  She was given no day off for two years and slept on a mat outside her employer's children's room.  I know right?  Almost unbelievable but it happens all over the world. Impoverished women being taken advantage of, humiliated and treated as sub-human.

However, as friend and Pledger pointed out, there are also very good employers in Singapore who are kind and respectful and they are included in the  book.

Thank you for reading this update.  Please come back soon.  I shall be posting once a week if not more so there will be plenty to sink your teeth into.
