We have reached 19% of our funding target and it's closing in on 20%. I think that’s ok. It’s difficult to judge. All I know is that I’m having to learn a lot of new skills on the hoof here.
One thing I do know, however, is that I love writing these odd little stories. Ever since I was approached with the idea of turning them into a book I’ve been pondering over questions and the more this thing becomes real, the more I need to answer them.
I think it is nigh-on impossible to avoid progressing the narrative with each story. I mentioned in the last note from this dingy attic that I loved leaving threads to pick up in a later story. That’s true but it also means I have to consider the impact this has upon the book as a whole. If I refer to Nurse Mariam’s marriage in one story and then have a wedding in a ‘later’ story then how does that play out if the reader opens the book and reads the wedding story first? Well, to my mind there are positives and negatives.
Sometimes this can be fun - I can write a story which involves lots of details and references, happy in the knowledge that the full import of those details will sink in as more stories are read. The book is definitely richer because of the number of stories in it. I just have to make sure (I think) that it doesn’t baffle someone who dips in and out over, say, a thirty-three year reading of it.
On the downside, I don't want people to feel confused when reading - as though they aren't in on the secret. You'd get that feeling if you started reading Game of Thrones at book 2 (or even chapter 2) and Badtime is hopefully more forgiving (but just as big a seller please).
In other thoughts - the video readings of the stories seem to be popular. If you subscribe to the YouTube channel then please share them with family and friends. Retweets and shares are great BUT even better are original posts from you. Pointing out this sort of thing goes against my natural inclination but I have to keep telling myself that you lot are more than capable of just patting me on the head and ignoring me.
Though if you do then just be warned, Cloister has lately taken to standing at the foot of people’s beds late at night…
