Tarot reader, death doula and dream guide Tree Carr brings her decades of experience to ARCANA: her modern guide to reading the cards

My love for the Rider-Waite - the world's best-known tarot deck - goes back to when I was a teenager. I became very interested in all things esoteric. During my adolescence in the late Eighties, I was experiencing what I now understand to be precognitive dreams, lucid dreams, astral projection and experiences with death and loss. Experiences like these made me want to explore consciousness, the occult, dreams and death as much as I could. I immersed myself in books in the esoteric and psychology sections of the local library, devouring as much information and knowledge as I could on the topics of dreams, the occult, death, astrology, polyphasic systems and Jungian Psychology.

And then I discovered tarot. I first saw the Rider-Waite tarot deck when I was 13 years old at a friend’s house. Her mother owned a deck, which had been left over from her hippie phase in the Sixties. As I shuffled through the cards, I was transfixed by the images I saw in front of me. They felt as though they held great mystery and they evoked strong emotions within me. Each card I gazed upon conjured up a different energy or emotion. Some of the cards were intimidating while others were transcendent. I eventually acquired my own deck and my own “Fool’s Journey” began.

Tarot is a 78-card system of divination that symbolically embodies archetypal forces both unconscious and conscious: internal and external. Used for more than half a millennia in various forms, tarot cards are pictorial talking points, rich in symbolic language, which present an overview of a person’s life journey: they allow us to reflect on the past, highlighting the present and postulating the future. The symbology of the cards are saturated with history, myth, the occult and the arcane. This is what makes them so enticing yet also intimidating to learn.

Anyone who wishes to unlock the secrets of the tarot faces a challenge, which is: how to work out the connections between the images depicted on them and how they relate to our lives - our external and internal realities past, present and future. Over the decades, as I delved deeper into the mysteries of the deck, I began to make sense of the symbols, myths, archetypes and even the body language of characters on the cards. It became a personal mission of mine to uncover the multilayered meanings and dimensions of the cards. (This must have been partly driven by my obsessive double Scorpio tendencies!)

I bring this knowledge and all of my experience of esoteric practices to ARCANA. Through several decades I’ve learnt and researched, and evolved alongside, the 78 cards. This is a tarot guidebook unlike any other -- as a death doula, a dreaming guide and divination guide, I’ve been able to allow the cards to also guide me through these practices, helping others and connecting to these universal themes and forces. Through my evolution of the cards and my practises in dreams, death and divination, I was able to traverse deeply through their layers. Through this process I’ve interpreted the meaning of the cards for modern readers, drawing upon parallels in modern psychology, identity politics, self help and the collective unconscious.

Although the Rider-Waite deck itself was a widely accessible one (and still is!), there is relatively little information that goes into detail on the meaning of the images themselves. What’s more, while certain images feel timeless, others (The Hierophant - The Pope - for example) can leave a reader feeling a little perplexed.  Over the years as a tarot reader and a teacher, I have seen the need for a respectful, detailed and modern guide, and it is this that I hope I have created in ARCANA.

This book will encapsulate the many years of my research and decoding of the Arcana in a comprehensive, academic, visual, fun and easy way to learn the Rider-Waite deck. You will embark upon your own “Fool’s Journey” through the reading of this book, bridging over the messages and lessons of the cards into your own day to day reality. I will not only guide the reader through the understanding of the cryptic messages of the cards, I’ll also guide through the process of connecting with your cards as external tools, exploring the realms of dreams, death, divination and deepening your intuitive abilities, Jungian Psychology and how to hold space for clients and querants in a reading and much more!

This book will be the first of its kind, blending the ancient mysteries with a modern approach based on the current climate of the 21st century. Think of it as a masterclass for newbies or seasoned tarot scholars alike.

Why do we still read the tarot?

From the days of antiquity, human beings have sought ways in which to connect to guidance to help them traverse the many ups and downs of the journey through life. From various forms of divination, dreamwork through to connecting with deceased ancestors, the quest for answers is an innate part of the human experience. From the casting of bones, to rune stones, scrying mirrors and tarot cards, these external tools of guidance have brought comfort, validation, decision making and have served as ‘talking points’ towards the bigger picture, helping to create an overview of the map through life.

And it hasn’t stopped! In the modern age of technological revolution and industrialisation, human beings are still seeking guidance and answers, and if not more than ever. Even though the 21st century has seen many achievements in technology and innovation, it is as though there is a sense of alienation: the isolation and disconnect from our inner worlds and that which is greater.

What is the history of the tarot?

With an estimation of more than a 100 million copies of the deck existing in more than 20 countries, the Rider-Waite tarot deck is the most popular and most used tarot cards worldwide. It is also a foundation deck, meaning that once you’ve learnt it, all tarot decks thereafter become easy to unlock, too.

First published in 1909, the deck was a triad collaborative creation by academic and mystic A.E. Waite, artist Pamela Colman Smith and publisher Rider Company. Although the deck is the most popular tarot deck sold to date, there is very little comprehensive, scholastic literature on the meanings, symbols, guidance and psychological approaches.

All of the Rider editions up to 1939 were available with a small guide written by A. E. Waite, which provided brief texts about interpretations, and descriptions of their symbols. The first version of this guide was published during 1909 and was titled The Key to the Tarot. A year later, a revised version, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, was issued that featured black-and-white plates of all seventy-eight of Smith's cards. And although these books were fundamental in their overview of the cards, they are very brief, only scratching the surface and the language and tone of the books reflect the social and psychological climate of the late 19th century/ early 20th century. For a 21st-century tarot reader or tarot student, much of the language and sentiment is now antiquated and hasn’t kept up with the complex social/psychological evolution that we’ve moved through into our modern age.

Why the Rider-Waite deck?

This classic deck is the blueprint and foundational template for all decks that have preceded it. From Aleister Crowley’s Thoth deck through to contemporary decks like The Modern Witch tarot deck, The Rider-Waite deck’s 78 card system along with the suits and archetypes is what is heavily referenced. In other words, if a person comprehensively learns the Rider-Waite deck then they will have no problem understanding all other tarot decks that follow.

What makes this tarot book different from the others?

There are a plethora of modern books available for the aspiring tarot reader and student. Many of them are very text heavy, without any visual prompts apart from the featured tarot card in any given section. The deck, containing 78 cards, is dense learning regardless and a text-heavy book on the tarot could be overwhelming for some people. This book will be the go to for EVERYTHING you need regarding The Rider-Waite Deck, presented in a comprehensive, academic, visual, easy to follow and easy to digest resource and learning book.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new way for people to buy books that they are excited about!

The key thing is: I need your help to make this book happen.

It’s very straightforward: if you pledge, you get a copy as soon as the book comes out plus your name in the back of the book as one of the supporters. It’s basically a pre-order with your name made eternal in a book that you believe in! Like with all crowdfunding there is always the risk of not reaching the financial target, so go for it! Pledge and spread the word so that as a collective we can bring this book into reality. When we hit 100% of the target, the book can be made. Magic made manifest through collective power!

Expected book spec: Hardback, 288pp, with black-and-white illustrations throughout.

The cover design is subject to change.

Pledge levels, for example the workshops and tarot readings, will be fulfilled once the project has funded and the book is released.
