It's the Final Countdown! (cue twiddly 80s synth riff)
Well, what a fortnight that was. After running my 'I've hit 75%!' Agatha Christie competition, I decided to go all out to get that final 25%. I'm not quite there yet but I am at 89% and just a pledge or two away from 90%.
That final 10% is going to be agonisingly slow!
Firstly, if you're a new subscriber and this is the first of my shedposts that you've seen, welcome! And thank you so much for putting your hand in your pocket to help this book become a reality. And for your patience. In this age of instant gratification it can be difficult to explain how the Unbound model of publishing works. In effect, your pledge has not only secured you an early copy of the book - a special first edition that won't be available in the shops incidentally - but your money has contributed to the pool that will pay for the editing, proofreading, design, cover art, printing and distribution. You've become a patron of the arts, a philanthropist, and your name will be emblazoned in the back of the book to say thank you in a very public and indelible way.
And yes, I do apologise unreservedly for emailing everyone I've ever collected an email address from! I promise there will be no more begging letters.
(That's a doodle I drew while thinking about some of my characters)
So what happens next? Well, as soon as we hit 100%, the book begins its journey to print starting with me working with my editor to iron out any wrinkles. I'm anticipating very few, I must say. I've gone through the book 20 times, editing and re-writing as I go and I think I've caught them all. I've also passed the book out to 12 critical readers - all people who are professional enough or close friends enough to not bullshit me. If they found something wrong they told me!
I'm already starting to think about cover design and I look forward to discussions with Mark Ecob, Unbound's excellent arty guy.
I'm also looking to the future and have started rendering the book into script form. It would make a really fun four part comedy drama and I will be pitching it as such.
So, lots going on!
Watch this space as the clock ticks towards 100%!
