A Love Of Two Halves

By PJ Whiteley

If one of the wealthiest people in Britain falls for one of the poorest, will the money be a salvation or an unsurmountable obstacle?

Thank you, thank you, mwah!

This is going to sound like an Oscars award acceptance speech, but I don’t care.

I just want to thank you, all of you, for supporting The Rooms We Never Enter, and for making sure it is published. On 28th February, after 14 months, we reached target. The book should appear this autumn; I can now start to plan fun things like selecting the book cover and planning the launch events (there will be one in Leeds and one in London).

There are 67 supporters altogether. I wasn’t sure I had that many friends, to be honest. I don’t think I’ve managed to lose any through my fundraising efforts. As I don’t have a huge number to begin with, there wasn’t much of a safety net... In any case, looking through the names, only 58 are familiar to me, as friends, family and known fans. So nine of you helped me without being acquainted: I am moved beyond words. Johnnie: you paid for a beta read, which I owe you. Do get in touch, phil@whiteleywords.com

Thank you. Did I say that already? Well, it’s still not enough. I asked you for cold, hard cash, and that is difficult to part with at the best of times. You made this artistic enterprise happen. I really hope I don’t disappoint you; there have been months of work going into the book. The readings of excerpts that I’ve given have been well received, and I’m pleased with the story, but ever so slightly nervous.

While it is an accessible book, a romcom at heart, I would like to think that it contains some thoughtful reflections upon relationships, upon being a single mum, or a lonely man, and upon the nature of life itself. I reject the notion that only tragedy and thrillers run deep – a good comedy ought to, also.

If it does disappoint, please let me know – but in a kindly manner, please, I’m quite sensitive. If you enjoy the book, please recommend it to others.

And, in case I haven’t said it already: THANK YOU.

Philip
