Photography Competition #1

It's photo competition time!

As mentioned a while back, I intend to illustrate the book with black and white photos. Now, I could just take them all myself (I will still take the majority of them) but where's the fun in that? This is a crowd-funded book and collaboration is fun! So how about you guys providing a few photos? It will make Why Did The Policeman Cross The Road? a much more interesting book than if I do all the photos myself.

So, here's the deal.

For this inaugural competition, I'm looking for certain images (preferably in landscape format rather than portrait but not essential). They are:

  • Someone being terrified of a spider, real or fake (as long as it looks real) - photoshopped well if you photoshop!
  • Kids playing football - jumpers for goalposts sort of image. Modern or vintage, it makes no difference.
  • Someone talking on a phone while driving - but don't get caught! Engine off! Or do the photo on your drive or somewhere else that isn't a public highway. Make it funny if you like - the image is all about distraction - so have a passenger chatting too or screaming kids in the back!
  • Some people running a Three card trick scam. Something like this (but with three cards face up - one must be the Queen of Spades):

  • A worn tennis lawn - I'm particularly after this kind of pattern - looks almost like a face or an inverted letter T. Have you been to Wimbledon in the past few years and taken photos for example?

Plus, a bit of a longshot here, I'm after photos of ...

  • Old Uxbridge Police Station (Windsor Street, Uxbridge).
  • Painted chewing gum street art by Ben Wilson and/or Ben Wilson at work (he works mostly in the Muswell Hill area).

The Rules:

  • The competition is open to anyone and everyone, amateur or professional.
  • You can submit old photos you already have or take brand new ones.
  • You can stage the photos - they don't have to be 'real life' (and it's a fun way to maybe get your face in the book!).
  • All photos used in the published book will be clearly credited with the photographer's/submitter's name.
  • EVERYONE who submits an entry to PHOTO COMP #1 will be entered into a prize draw. The winner will be chosen at random by an unconnected third party. The prize for this first competition is a copy of The Fry Chronicles signed by author Stephen Fry.
  • All images chosen for use in the book will remain the copyright of the person submitting the image and will only ever be used for editions of Why Did The Policeman Cross The Road? A release form, clearly stating the terms of use, and signed by myself and the winning photographer(s) will be completed for all images before usage.
  • All images submitted that don't get used in the book will not be used by me in any form for any other purpose.

That all clear? Good.

The photos have to be a reasonably decent resolution so that they work in print - most smartphones are good enough for my purposes. If you scan an older image that you already have, please scan at a minimum of 300dpi.

Please send your images to stevyncolgan@me.com and headline your email 'Photo Comp #1'.

The cut off date for submissions will be Sunday 5th July.

That gives you a good three weeks to get involved - and then I'll launch PHOTO COMP #2!

Be creative! Be arty! Have fun!

I can't wait to see what you come up with!
