Lovely Rita

The sometimes fun and often frustrating thing about being a freelance writer is that you never really get a holiday. The brain is always whirling with new ideas. If, like me, you write a lot about film and television, you can't even relax in front of the goggle box with turkey sandwich in hand without seeing it as a little bit of research. Naturally, I watch an awful lot of comedy - mainly of the vintage variety. During this Christmas period ITV3 have churned out a seemingly never ending supply of 1970s British comedy. And no-one was such a omnipresence, but now largely unheralded, fixture of this than Rita Webb. With flaming red hair, the face of a bulldog chewing a wasp and a rasping voice spat out with razor-blades of aggression, she scored great success opposite Frankie Howerd, Morecambe and Wise, Benny Hill, Eric Sykes and most of the legends of classic light entertainment. She is a behemoth of comedy. Should we remember her? Of course we bleeding should!
