Glasgow Kiss

A day after Valentine's and love is still in the air. Sort of. It was certainly love that made legendary Scots comedian Chic Murray a star. Although his laconic legacy is still not as celebrated as it should be North of the border, he remains a Scottish legend and was recently named 'The Comedian's Comedian'. However, it was his wife, Maidie Dickson, who was the initial power behind the throne.

Having met at the Greenock Empire in the mid-1940s it was, as Maidie always remembered it, "love at first sight". The Tall Droll and his Small Doll were a major variety theatre attraction for a quarter of a century. The couple separated, both professionally and domestically, in the 1970s but remained close friends. Indeed, a brick wall was all that was between them when Chic died in January 1985. Still, it is Maidie Dickson who we celebrate in the Forgotten Heroes: the diminutive and feisty muse for a truly great comedian.
