Cycling Up a Hill in Only One Gear

Isn’t easy. It’s tempting to get off and push. After a year of cycling to India, and then navigating my way back through Europe, I refused to get off my bike. I became what’s known as “bloody minded.”

A mere week away from home, cycling through the forest parks outside Paris, I cycled up a 1:3 hill with my fully loaded touring bicycle in only one gear. The wrong one. The high one. It nearly killed me.

“What a way to go,” they would have said, “just at journey’s end. He should have used his granny wheel.”

But I love challenging myself like this, making myself feel properly alive, digging my fingernails into the wallpaper of life.

Now, I’m not comparing crowdfunding a book to cycling up a hill in only one gear. (Well I am actually given that this is the title of the post.) But there is something daunting and invigorating and honest about gathering little bits of belief, person by person, pledge by pledge, increment by increment, to make the grand design in your head a reality.

Thanks to everyone for their support for "Mind is the Ride" so far, for being as determined as I am.

I could get off the bike and push. But I’ve got the momentum going now...

If you haven’t already please share the word.
