This thing about swimming outside started as a child but really got going in the late 1990s when living in London. Swimming at Parliament Hill Lido at the weekend was exhilarating and interesting - there was always something happening or someone fascinating to talk to. Happy with our swims but aware of other pools in London I read an article one day about how you could swim them in a day if you put your mind to it (and had enough swimming costumes!). I was hooked. Finding Oliver Merrington and Andy Hoines lists of lidos and open air pools on the internet fuelled the interest; being given a copy of Liquid Assets by Janet Smith started a mild obsession of seeing and swimming them all. Watery bliss!
That's where it all began, almost 20 years ago - it has been so much more than a quest to 'tick them all off'. On the way through handwritten lists, annotated maps and notebooks crammed with facts about about pools, I've learned about the UK, the communities who run and swim in them, about volunteers and different types of organisations who run pools and varied communities of swimmers.
It has made for a fascinating and enjoyable quest that has taken me almost two decades to swim, brought me into new, welcoming communities and created a lot of happy memories and stories - we really want to share the joy of all of these different aspects with you in this book.
